While students are eagerly waiting for the CBSE Class 10 and Class 12 board exam results, the board has decided to bring large-scale changes in the assessment process the next year. There will be multipronged changes in the whole process to make it more comprehensive, skill-based, and competency-based. All these changes are primarily based on the National Education Policy (NEP-2020).

For both Classes 10 and 12, students, parents and even teachers will witness several sets of structural refurbishing which will help in the holistic assessment of the students. Many of these changes have already been introduced in some schools, and based on the experience, this will be followed by all the schools from 2024.

CBSE Secretary Anurag Tripathi talked to India Today exclusively and revealed the plans which are introduced by the board.

20% INTERNAL ASSESSMENT FOR ALL SUBJECTS, EVEN FOR THOSE WITH NO PRACTICAL EXAMS

A three-hour-long examination after the end of the year cannot judge the competence of the student in the true sense. So, the assessment should be a year-long process, he said.

Even in all those papers where there are no practical exams, 20% internal assessment will be necessary. This experiment is on the basis of the National Education Policy (NEP). Students will be assessed by teachers, parents and peer groups of the students and 20% marks will be given on that basis.

There will be projects and industry connections as well. Social work, and sports will also be included, Tripathi said.

MAJOR STRUCTURAL CHANGES IN QUESTION PAPERS: 33% MORE QUESTIONS TO PROVIDE MORE OPTIONS

There will be two types of structural changes in the question papers The first change is that CBSE has increased the number of questions by 33% internally to provide more choices for students.

This would make the question papers longer and students would be able to choose from the multiple options.

NATURE OF QUESTIONS WILL ALSO CHANGE: FOCUS WILL BE ON ANALYTICAL AND CRITICAL THINKING

The second change in the CBSE question papers would be on the type of questions. The questions will be skill-based and competency-based from now on so that students can think analytically and critically.

They have to relate and correlate the learnings and bring out a new answer to the question. Those answers can’t be found in the books and for these, students and teachers would have to practice a lot.

ASSESSMENT SURVEY TO TAKE PLACE IN CLASSES 3, 5 AND 8: FOCUS TO ASSESS STRUCTURAL CAPABILITY TO FILL THE LEARNING GAPS

Another change in the CBSE assessment process will be the evaluation of a student in Classes 3, 5 and 8. It will aim to achieve the structural assessment of a student.

“Till now, there is no idea what the level is of a student from Class 1 to 10. We even cannot identify the learning gaps and the level of learning for the student. The teacher never shared the developments at these levels with the CBSE board,” said Anurag Tripathy.

“Now, we will do an assessment survey of these students in Classes 3, 5 and 8. This exam will not be like the common examination in which students score marks. Through these tests, we will intimate teachers and parents about the level of their child and how a student has improved from the earlier levels,” he explained.

“We will identify instances such as where a Class 3 student has no idea about the mathematics and science subjects of Class 2. So, the learning gaps will be shared with the aim to bridge them in the next classes,” Tripathy said.

INTRODUCTION OF HOLISTIC ASSESSMENT CARDS: 360-DEGREE ASSESSMENT BY TEACHERS, PARENTS, PEER GROUPS AND BY STUDENTS THEMSELVES

CBSE is also going to introduce holistic assessment cards for the students. “We have created and launched assessment cards. In a few schools, this has started as a pilot project as well,” Tripathy said.

“Through an assessment card, a student will be evaluated by teachers, parents, and the peer group, and the student will also do a self-assessment. We are terming this as a 360-degree assessment of the students,” he added.

The CBSE board has already launched these reforms. From next year, these assessments will be done as a pilot project in a few chosen schools only and if this experiment is fruitful and successful, then from 2024, they will be implemented everywhere, said CBSE Secretary Anurag Tripathy.
