19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022: Indian men’s cricket team announced
The Indian men’s cricket team has been officially announced for the Asian Games 2023. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed the composition of the team, consisting of 15 primary members and five standby players. The Asian Games 2023 will be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8.
During the Asian Games, the men’s cricket event will be played in the T20 format from September 28 to October 8. All matches are scheduled to take place at the Zhejiang University of Technology Pingfeng Cricket Field.
Due to the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup commencing in India on October 5, the Indian team for the Asian Games will comprise mostly second-string players, as several key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will not be part of the squad.
However, the selected team for the Asian Games includes a group of talented young players, many of whom have showcased their skills in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Leading the team as captain will be 26-year-old Ruturaj Gaikwad, who represents the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.
Arshdeep Singh, a left-arm pacer and the highest wicket-taker for the Punjab Kings in IPL 2023, has secured his place in the squad. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who recently made an impressive century on his debut in a Test match against the West Indies, has also been included in the team.
Another noteworthy addition is Rinku Singh, known for his impactful performances for the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2023. This marks the first time that both the men’s and women’s cricket teams have been named for the Asian Games cricket competition.
Cricket has previously been featured at the Asian Games in Guangzhou 2010 and Incheon 2014, with Bangladesh winning the inaugural edition and Sri Lanka emerging as the defending champions. Afghanistan finished as runners-up in both instances.
The Asian Games 2023 will be the second multi-sport event in which the Indian men’s cricket team participates. They previously competed in the 1998 Commonwealth Games held in Kuala Lumpur, where they played in a 50-over format. However, those matches did not hold international status and were categorised as List A games.
